Patrick Swayze, star of popular classic films such as Ghost, Dirty Dancing, and Road House, died Monday, September 15th 2009. He was 57 years old and spent the previous 20 months battling a particularly deadly form of pancreatic cancer.
The news of Swayze’s fight with cancer broke in March 2008, saddening the heart of many fans and movie buffs alike.
Swayze used his swinging dance moves and ripped, muscular physique to wow female viewers of all ages. On several occasions, he successfully portrayed a no-nonsense, tough guy, Chuck-Norri-style hero who punished the bad guys and saved beautiful women from danger.
He Was a Good Man
Patrick Swayze never inspired much in the way of negative press. He managed to avoid controversy for the most part, winning awards and hearts throughout the years. Swayze had his ups and downs, but ultimately society is better for having experienced him.
All things considered though, Patrick Swayze was not a healthy man. For all his martial arts and high intensity dance moves, he still developed cancer.
You might ask why he developed cancer, because you want to take steps to avoid unknowingly following the same path. Let’s examine the possibilities.
Some possible reasons for his developing cancer could be:
- His 3-pack-a-day smoking habit.
- The alcohol consumption that eventually led to a stay in rehab.
- A dirty mouth and discolored teeth.
Yes, clearly cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption will put you on the fast track to the death pool, but if you acknowledge that ‘a dirty mouth’ could indeed be part of the problem, you must be smarter than you look.
Poor Oral Hygiene May Contributed to Heart Disease and Cancer
![]() |
Oral hygiene experts for years have been telling us that a dirty mouth can lead to significant health problems.
One great analogy used by dentists, is that a dirty mouth is like a factory dumping pollution into a river. Bacteria from your mouth is the sewage that seeps into your bloodstream, causing your blood and body to become polluted.
Your bloodstream then carries this bacteria to all points in the body that can be reached by arteries and blood vessels - basically everywhere.
This pollution then inflames the arteries, causes free radical formation, and possibly increases your risk of developing cancer or having a heart attack.
Studies Published in the Journal of Periodontology
Several issues of the Journal of Periodontology have published findings about the relationship between a healthy mouth and a healthy body.
Studies published in May 2005 furthered our understanding about the link between oral bacteria and heart disease. Researchers found that the DNA of periodontal bacteria from the mouth was found in the plaque of the heart’s arteries.
These findings help researchers confirm what they have long theorized, that if there is a sterile pathway, such as a bloodstream near an infected area, bacteria can travel and cause harm to other regions of the body. Harm that can range from heart disease, to cardiovascular disease, to cancer.
Additionally, researchers have drawn conclusions about the negative effect that oral germs can have on the overall health of the body. Germs cause illness and can eventually lead to other diseases.
Protect Yourself From Oral Disarray
Take action now to protect yourself from the cesspool that is your own mouth.
Actions you should take everyday to maintain proper oral hygiene:
- Use antioxidants to fight free radicals in your system.
- Brush twice a day, for at least 2 minutes, with dentist-recommended toothpaste.
- Floss at least once a day for 2 minutes.
- Rinse regularly with an antiseptic mouthwash.
- Remove extrinsic bacteria from your teeth using an effective teeth whitening product.
Best of luck to you and your family. Keep a healthy mouth to keep a healthy body.
